Super Star Wars Review

Could this Star Wars game be considered super?

08/14/2001

Background/Story
The story line is the same as that of Star Wars IV: A New Hope, with a few minor changes. You are Luke Skywalker and you live near the dessert called the Dune Sea (the same place where the first level begins). You meet up with Obi-Wan Kenobi, you get a Light Sabre and you rescue some droids (instead of buying them like in the movie). You eventually destroy the death star with your flying ship called an X-Wing.

Game Statistics

  • 3rd Person and Pilot modes.
  • Incredible stereo music from the motion picture.
  • Three difficulty levels.
  • 8-Megabit Cartridge.

Game Design
The game incorporates classic 3rd person side scrolling (like in Mario games) as well as pilot modes. The first level is side scrolling and in this mode you can use your pistol and fire at enemies, and you face a boss at the end. The next level you are in your land speeder zooming across the Dune Sea to the Jawa's landcrawler, where in the third level you rescue droids. In the last level you fight from within your X-Wing flying around the Death Star. The combined modes gives lots of verity to the game play. While in the side scrolling levels you can get weapon ups and other helpful items, like thermal detonators. There are a lot of repeat creatures, which isn't uncommon for this type of game. Overall, the alternating modes of play add a lot of flavour to this game, which really helps induce the Star Wars atmosphere.

Graphics
The graphics are well done in both modes of play. However, it can get choppy some times. The sprites are well designed and engineered to copy the Star Wars universe. The backgrounds also suit the mode of star wars. But is seems when there are a lot of explosions, the game slows down and skips some frames. In the pilot modes, the background is not too bad (considering there isn't a 3-D accelerator in the SNES). My favourite mode is when you are in the X-Wing. The graphics really make this game cause you to forget about its choppy tendencies.

Sound
The in-game control is very basic and there are no complex menus. The game pretty much starts with no setup required. Standard d-pad movement with attack and jump buttons. Most of the buttons have been used and the ones that are not used don't really need to be included for this game. Overall, no big issued with controls in this game.

Control
The control is rather good. You have a cursor comparable to mouse for most of the menus. The interface and the controls are fine and they give you no trouble while navigating through them. One thing really sticks out though. That is the loading time for the maps while in the new game menu. It can be quite a wait just to see a potential map you may use. Overall, the controls are well adapted for the game play.

Satisfaction
If you like Star Wars, this game is for you! This game has classic weapons from Star Wars, Jawas, and X-Wings; what more could you ask for. From attacking huge bosses to zooming along in your landspeeder this game has it all. It is nearly always fun to play; however it can be a little frustrating in some levels. Basically, if you like Star Wars, you will love this game.

Replay Value/Game Length
The game is fairly challenging. Not so much challenging as it is to figure out. Many times you will not know what to do to complete levels, and half the fun is finally figuring out what to do. In a good long time this game can be completed. After that the game is pretty much over, but I play it now and again just for the awesome music and sound effects (and the X-Wing!). While this game is not overly long, it is more than overly fun to play.

Overall
This Star Wars game is a classic in my mind, however it has been overlooked by many as just another Star Wars game. This game has awesome music, graphics, and effects; you name it this game has got it. You will generally love this game if you are a fan of Star Wars, or if you just like beating up bad guys and saving the universe. A well rounded, all around fun kind of game.
