Double Dragon V: The Shadow Falls Review

A generic 2-D fighter.

03/06/2001

Background/Story
Two brothers, Jimmy and Billy Lee, are masters of the martial arts called "the dragon". They uphold justice and freedom; however, the evil Shadow Master has concocted a plan to spread his deadly shadow plague throughout Metro City, and then the world. You must fight his evil henchmen, the shadow warriors, and stop them from releasing their deadly virus. You can play as either Billy or Jimmy Lee to defeat all of the shadow warriors, and the shadow master; you can alternatively play as a shadow warrior and attempt to win the favour of the Shadow Master by proving your skills against other shadow warriors.

Game Statistics

  • 10 fighters.
  • Extensive sound testing options.
  • 24-megabit cartridge.

Game Design
This is your classic street fighter style game. There are special moves for each fighter as well as the standard kicks punches, and blocks. Players fight a best of three match to determine the victor. The game includes a 1P-tournament mode, 1P-quest mode, 2P vs. mode, computer battles (for betting on computer players?), and an in-depth profile of each character. The options menu is very detailed including controller configuration and awesome sound testing options. The design of this game is nothing new, with no real exciting/different features.

Graphics
The graphics are pretty good for it's era. The backgrounds look good, but are a bit stingy on the animation; they only have like 3-frame animations for cheering onlookers. There are some good portrait images as well as some nifty victory dances. Overall, the lack of frames do not do the graphics justice.

Sound
The sound may be the best part of this game. It contains a very cool soundtrack, with some catchy themes. There are quite a few of these songs too, which is very nice variety. The sound effects are also well done, with an impressive amount of voice samples. You can also listen to all of these cool music pieces with the sound tester in the options menu. Overall, I really liked listening to this game.

Control
Personally I dislike playing fighting games with SNES controllers. They lack the ability to perform effective 'roll' d-pad moves. The '+' shape of the controller limits the use of the attacks that require any roll of the d-pad. This is quite annoying. Other than that, The controls are decent. The shoulder buttons are really good for fighting games and they have been used effectively here. To sum it up, I hate roll d-pad moves.

Satisfaction
This game was pretty good as far as fighter games go. Nothing too special, but the game includes a unique set of fighters. Defeating really tough opponents can be a pain, but when you beat them you are quite happy. Since I bought this game used, I was fairly happy with my purchase, however I probably would not buy it new.

Replay Value/Game Length
The one-player modes can be beaten in a few days once you get into the fighting groove. The multi-player fighting will last until you get a new fighting game, then it will be obsolete. Not very much replay value.

Overall
If you're a fan of Double Dragon games, this fighter will be cool to play. It is an average fighter with some darn good music.
