Game Design
This game is in my opinion, the game that all 2-D side scrollers are based on. You play as Mario and jump on enemies and over gaps. The goal is to reach the end of the level without getting hurt. Mario gets special powers as well. When Mario eats a Super Mushroom, he will grow and become Super Mario. Super Mario is twice the size of regular Mario. If Super Mario gets hit he will revert back to regular Mario. Of course, if Mario acquires a fire flower, he will be able to shoot fireballs at enemies (it is just common knowledge). You want the fire flower. The levels in this game are varied, there are: underground sewers, castle dungeons, swimming and the regular "outdoor" levels. Each of the different types of levels offers game play variety. There are many different enemies from the simple Goombas and Koopa Troopas to the more challenging Hammer Brothers. All in all, Super Mario Bros. is an excellent platformer. Without the innovation of Super Mario Bros., the platformers that exist today wouldn't exist.

Graphics
The graphics in Super Mario Bros. pale in comparison to the later NES titles. However, when Super Mario Bros. was released, it looked really good. Most of the characters are 16 pixels in width and around 16-32 pixels in height. The sprites look respectable considering the fact that they contain few colours and are at a low resolution. The levels look adequate. Background and foreground elements are easily identifiable. The simplistic animation is a reminder of how old this game really is.

Sound
The audio in this game is oozing in classicness. All of the music is memorable. Many people are able to hum the notes of the Super Mario Bros theme. However, Super Mario Bros. doesn't exactly contain a phenomenal soundtrack. It is good not great. The sound effects are classics too. All of the beeps a boops that we have come accustom to can be found in this game.

Control
This game has a good control scheme. The controls, while being incredibly simplistic adequately fit the needs of this game. One will not falter because of this game's control style.

Satisfaction
This game is pure fun. There are many mazes and challenges to keep the greatest gamers entertained. One serious problem is that there is no save option. This makes the game incredibly difficult. To beat this game, you will have to master it.

Replay Value/Game Length
Eight worlds and thirty-six levels was a long game back in the day. Nowadays, Super Mario Bros. does not seem like such a long game at all. However, because of this game's immense difficulty level, it will take the average game a while to complete it. Conversely, once this game has been completed, there is little motivation to play it again.

Overall
Super Mario Bros. is a classic game. Nowadays it is not a stunning example of 2-D side scrolling action, but it is still a good game. Every true gamer should play this game once in their lifetime.
