Game Design
Super Smash Bros. is different than other fighting games. There is no damage meter and characters do not die. Instead of a damage meter, there is a damage counter. The damage counter adds up the damage received from enemy attacks. As the damage counter gets higher, enemy attacks will knock a character farther and father away. If a character is smashed off the level, he will lose one point. The character that smashes a character off the level will gain a point. After a specific amount of time, the character with the highest score wins the match. Also, instead of a time match, a stock match can be played. In a stock match, each fighter is given a specific amount of lives. Once a fighter is smashed off a level it will lose a life. If a fighter loses all of his stock, it loses the match. The last fighter remaining wins a stock match. The fighting engine in Super Smash Bros. differs greatly from fighting engines in other fighting games. There are no long combos or finishing moves. Each character has their own unique attacks and abilities, however the button combinations are the same for each character. For example, pressing UP + B is a jump-type move for almost each character. This allows anyone learn the controls quickly and jump into multiplayer match. Also, to further add excitement, HAL has added approximately 20 items derived from other Nintendo games to add gameplay variety. Super Smash Bros. is one of the most addictive multiplayer games on the Nintendo 64.
Graphics
Overall this game contains good visuals. The are many nice graphical effects when characters attack each other. Pikachu's thunderbolt attack looks very impressive. The backgrounds are well drawn for the most part. The low-polygonal character models are not impressive, most of the characters in this game look worse than in other N64 games. The item sprites get really blocky when the game is paused (the camera is zoomed in on a character). However, the items look just fine when the game is being played. The framerate almost never takes a hit, which is a good thing. The graphics in Super Smash Bros. fit the game nicely even though they don't impress.
Sound
The sound effects in this game a nothing out of the ordinary. Each character has speech during different attacks. Every item has its own sound effect when it is used. Contact between fighters can be distinguished. The single greatest sound element in the game is the crowd noises. An "audience" will cheer when a fighter does something excellent; the typical crowd "ooohs" and "aaahhs" are also evident. The crowd will occasionally chant a fighters name over an over again.
Control
Contrary to other fighting games, the controls are very simple. I would like to say that it's about time. The R button will throw a character, the A button will perform generic attacks. The B button performs special attacks. The C buttons are used to jump. Finally, the Z button is used as a shield. The simplistic control scheme allows for a short leaning curve. A short learning curve is a necessity for a game of this nature.
Satisfaction
Fans of fighting games may ridicule this game because of its simplistic nature. They shouldn't. This game is extremely fun and enjoyable. The single-player mode is quite easy, which may also cause hardcore fighter fans to ridicule this game. They shouldn't.
Replay Value/Game Length
While the single player mode is very short. This game is at its core a multiplayer game. Super Smash Bros. is one of the best multiplayer games on the Nintendo 64. If you frequently have friends over at your house or live in a large family, this game is for you.
Overall
Super Smash Bros. is a different fighting game and an awesome multiplayer game. A great choice for anyone.
