Perfect Dark Review

This game is "Perfect" Dark.

Background/Story
Perfect Dark, is nearly just that, "Perfect". Rare truly has outdone itself with this game. Everyone who has ever played Goldeneye, knows just how fun a multiplayer first person shooter can be. Especially when it is produced by Rare. I loved Goldeneye. In fact, I gought N64 because of it. I was just waiting for a sequel to come out, maybe for the new bond movie. However as we all know that would become impossible when Rare lost the rights to make James Bond games. And so, not detered by the Bond sell-outs, Rare put on it's thinking cap and spawned the new, Joanna Dark. Her code name being "Perfect Dark". Joanna is an agent for the Carrington Institute, an organization similar to what Bond himself works for, I suppose. The multiplayer mode is just awesome containing so many options and scenarios (Submit a scenario of your own to The Nintendo Index). The Single player mode is very interesting, although sometimes hard to follow, it allows for the introduction of some bizarre weapons.

Game Statistics

  • 5 game modes.
  • Three difficulty levels.
  • Rumble pak compatible.
  • 256 megabit cartridge.
  • 9 single-player missions.
  • 4 special missions.
  • 16 combat simulator scenarios.
  • 30 combat simulator challenges.

Game Design
The game design is excellant. All your favourite Goldeneye levels are back as are your favourite weapons. Plus, even more unique levels and weapons have been added. The random gun function is something I like a lot. With so many weapons it is nice to just get random weapons. The levels are awesome, there are unlimited combos for the characters you can use. And um... the scenarios....**drool**....... ah hem. Sorry the past few sentances are random and scattered mumblings. Basically, Perfect dark is about options. You have many options. You don't like a level, don't use it, you think a gun is cheap, don't include it. You can't NOT like this game, because you can change what you don't like. My colleague "Noel" seems to be confuesd about that, saying that the Farsight XR20 is cheap. So what, don't use it. That is the bottom line, you chose how to play.

Graphics
Perfect dark has truly spectacular textures and lighting effects. The option to have your characters have different heads is cool. Also, the level of detail is truly a sight to see. The animation of talking charcters isn't that good, but the background detail more than makes up for that. This game is really for awesome play value, and the nice graphics really contribute to the atmosphere of the game.

Sound
I truly love the music in this game. I would dare to say it is better than the Goldeneye music, simply because of its originality. It was easy making music for Goldeneye because it already existed. The Perfect dark Music is really nice, in fact, I have downloaded many music files from the web, just to listen to it. The speech is good, but the lack of animation while talking was disapointing. Overall, I love the music and the soud effects, nice work Rare!

Control
The controls are nearly exactly the same as in Goldeneye. That means if you played Goldeneye, you already have your favourite control style memorized. The controls remain great. (1.2 is the best, or Solitaire for you Bond players).

Satisfaction
All I need to say is: "If you have N64, buy this game, if you don't, Buy N64, then buy this game!"

Replay Value/Game Length
Many levels of difficulty for the single player mode, lots of memory for saving, and a multiplayer game that can't be beat. The multiplayer game is the most amazing one ever. My all-time favourite multiplayer game is Perfect Dark.

Overall
Truly Amazing. "If you don't have this game you better be dead, or in jail, and if your in jail, break out!"
