Mario Kart: Super Circuit Review

If there is any single reason to buy a Game Boy Advance, it is to play this game!

Background/Story
In Mario Kart: Super Circuit, all eight racers from Mario Kart 64 are back: Mario, Luigi, Princess Toadstool, Yoshi, Toad, Bowser, Donkey Kong Jr. and Wario. You can race on 20 new tracks plus the 20 original tracks in Super Mario Kart. This game was developed by Intelligent Systems and published by Nintendo.

Game Statistics

  • 44 tracks.
  • 5 game modes.
  • 3 difficulty levels.
  • 8 selectable characters.
  • Battery backed memory to save time trials and ghost times.
  • 32-megabit cartridge.

Game Design
Nintendo promised that Mario Kart: Super Circuit would contain the best racing elements from both the SNES and Nintendo 64 games. For the most part, Nintendo was correct. Mario Kart: Super Circuit contains many of the best ideas from previous games in the series however; it does not contain them all. My personal favorite character, Koopa Troopa, who is not a playable character, is still not available as a playable character. Nintendo has used the same racer lineup from Mario Kart 64 in Mario Kart: Super Circuit. Every useable item in Mario Kart: Super Circuit is from both Super Mario Kart and Mario Kart 64, most of the items are back but, the golden mushroom and the jumping feather are not. Don't let me fool you this is an awesome game. Just like Super Mario Kart, and Mario Kart 64, the game is balanced; racers in last place will get great items. These items will help them get back in the lead, while racers in the lead will get items that aren't quite as good. All the characters are well balanced statistically; there is no best character. The level design is quite possibly the best in any racing game. There are many hidden shortcuts in the game; it will take weeks before even the most obsessive player will find them all. Intelligent Systems has created 24 new tracks for this game (20 racing and 4 battle mode tracks). Also, as an added bonus, every racing track from Super Mario Kart has been included in this game (20 in total).

Graphics
Mario Kart: Super Circuit uses the same mode 7 graphical technique that was used in Super Mario Kart, to create simple 3-D graphics. The graphics in Mario Kart: Super Circuit are comparable to the SNES version but they look much more detailed. The character sprites are very detailed; they truly show the power of the Game Boy Advance. The character sprites in Mario Kart: Super Circuit look as good or better then the ones found in Mario Kart 64. The background landscapes in this game are very detailed and put the Super Nintendo version to shame.

Sound
The sound effects and music in Mario Kart: Super Circuit are excellent. There are new music tracks for the new courses and they sound great. Also, the classic courses in the game contain the same music from the original Super Mario Kart and those songs sound great. There are as many or more voice samples in Mario Kart: Super Circuit as there were in Mario Kart 64. Considering that the Mario Kart 64 cartridge is three times larger than the Mario Kart: Super Circuit, the amount of audio and the quality of the audio is astounding in Mario Kart: Super Circuit.

Control
This Mario Kart game handles almost like the other Mario Kart games. The only difference is that items are used with the L button due to the fact that the Game Boy Advance contains fewer buttons than the SNES controller. Also, some players with larger hands will get sore hands playing this game for an extended period of time.

Satisfaction
It is pretty difficult not to like this game. This Mario Kart game has almost everything! Mario Kart fans will be stunned by the excellent multiplayer mode.

Replay Value/Game Length
This is the longest Mario Kart game. To complete everything, you must get a gold award on every cup on every difficulty level. Then you must replay every cup on every difficulty level and get 100 coins to unlock the classic Super Mario Kart tracks. Finally, you must get a gold award on every classic cup on every difficulty level. Once that is completed you can attempt time trials on 40 tracks as well as play the best multiplayer mode on the Game Boy Advance.

Overall
This game is the definitive game in the Mario Kart series. It is best multiplayer game on the Game Boy Advance. Simply put - a must own.
