Background/Story
You play as the commander of a small band of ships called the "rogue group". Hence, you are "Rouge Leader". This means you may play as Luke Skywalker or As Wedge Antilles. You pilot many different spacecraft in order to complete missions for the rebellion against the evil empire. If you have seen, and liked Star Wars, then there is no doubt in my mind that you will love this game. The first mission in the game is the Death Star Trench Run, which is straight out of Episode IV. The game goes from here, all the way to the Battle of Endor, from Episode VI.

Game Design
Being a sequel to Rogue Squadron, Rogue Leader uses the same basic flight simulator engine as its counterpart. This gives the option of cockpit view or a 3rd person view of your spacecraft while flying. Every type of rebel-empire encounter has been included in this game, from the Battle of Hoth, using Snowspeeders, to the Battle of Endor, using Han's Millennium Falcon. Even additional special levels can be unlocked, and you can play as Darth Vader, during the Death Star Trench Run Battle. Thanks to the new hardware of the GameCube, Factor 5 was able to create an awesome game with incredible polygonal star ships and buildings. All in all, this game is extremely well designed.
Graphics
The graphics in this game are drool-worthy. The space battles are truly a sight to behold. Even with the massive amounts of laser fire, the frame rate remains constant. When the first battle sequence begins, it starts by playing a movie with X-Wings approaching the Death Star. I caught myself saying, "man if only the graphics were as good as this during game play." Well, I spoke too soon, because I soon as I began to fly my X-Wing I noticed that the graphics were STILL AMAZING. The Graphics in this game are better than were used in the original Star Wars movie itself. The Death Star Trench Run is an absolute dream for Star Wars fans. The textures for the death star are incredible. When you fly down the trench and fire your lasers, you can even see the rest of the trench being lit up by the laser's red light. Also included is a little spacecraft select mode, where you can run around and look at the other ships in the hangar. The game also includes DVD-quality footage right out of the movies. This game is worth picking up for the graphics alone, not to mention the awesome game play.
Sound
I am a big fan of the Star Wars soundtrack from the movies. These tracks have been included in this game, and I must say, that is awesome. Also many speech tracks have been included from many various characters, from Han Solo to Admiral Akbar. The sound quality is absolutely stunning and is so well incorporated into the game play.
Control
The controls are quite effective. However, a lot of this game's difficulty lies in effectively using the controls of the various ships that you pilot. Each ship has its own control limitations. Basically, if you are not turning as fast, or as sharp as you think you should be, this is not the design of the controls, but rather the design of the game. This game also made use of the analog trigger buttons, which control the amount of boost you are using. As well, the menu system is easy to navigate. The controls are well suited to the game play of this game.
Satisfaction
Satisfaction will vary from person to person. If you like flight simulator games, this game is for you. Likewise, if love Star Wars this game is for you. If you love awesome graphics and game play, this game is for you. However, if you are one who is quick to give up when you don't understand what to do, then this game can be very frustrating. The only thing I was dissatisfied with was the lack of a multiplayer mode. After playing Rogue Squadron, I thought that this time around they would have an awesome multiplayer mode. I was hoping for multiplayer missions where you and your friends are the rogue squadron fighting the empire; a head-to-head multiplayer mode would have been awesome also. Despite the things I have wished for, I still find this game very, very satisfying to play.
Replay Value/Game Length
This game is not extremely long, but it does provide incentive to play for a long period of time. Here are some reasons: The levels can be tough, gold/silver/bronze medals are awarded based on your performance in each mission, these medals give you points which can be used to unlock secret levels, secret items are placed throughout the missions, and also it is just fun to play the cool levels, over and over.
Overall
Truly a fun game. If you would like an excellent compilation of graphics, music, and game play, then you should definitely purchase this game. The only thing wrong with this game may be that it is not long enough, by that I mean that you wish there were more levels because they are so fun to play.
