Introduction ---------------- Most heroes in games have a noble deed to complete. Rescue a princess, save the world, yada yada yada. Not Nana and Popo. They're in it for the "special" veggies at the top of a mountain, killing all the wildlife they see along the way. Not your typical heroes. Anyways, this game still kicks arse, and stands as one of the original classics on the NES. Hope this FAQ helps you out. 2. Overview And Controls ------------------------- Nana and Popo, a young mountain climbing couple, have heard of mystical vegetables on the tops of mountains. They decide to grab a couple, peddle them on the black market, and make a couple of bucks. Also, since these were the days before that whole save the ecosystem thing , these climbers also bash any Yeti or bird that gets in their way with their huge mallets. Don't see originality like that in today's games. Anyways, you control Popo(the boy in blue) when you play single-player, and the second player controls Nana (the girl in pink) when you play two-player. The controls are: START - Pauses the game SELECT - Chooses One Player or Two Player on the main menu Left-Right on the D-Pad - Moves Nana or Popo left or right Up-Down on the D-Pad - Chooses mountain on the main menu (32 in all) B - Slams down the mallet A - Jumps 3. Point Values ---------------- Since you can't actually beat the game and get an ending, most of the time you try to get the best score possible. A score tally isn't shown until you climb to the top of the mountain and either get the bonus or not. Here are the point values: Birds - 800 points Blocks hit by mallet - 10 x Number of the mountain points(Ex. On mountain 10, each ice block would be worth 100 points.) Ice Blocks(used by Yeti to fill the gaps) - 400 points Bonus Stage Vegetables ----------------------- Eggplant - 300 points Radishes - 500 points Cabbage - 600 points Cucumbers - 700 points - The cycle then repeats, with 100 point increments for the next bonus stage vegeatbles. 4. How Nana And Popo Get Around -------------------------------- And I do mean GET AROUND. But that's a different story, and won't really help you with the gameplay. What I'm talking about is the movement of the characters. It can be a little difficult to get used to, as the characters slide around on the mountain, and jumping can be a pain. Here's a diagram showing how Nana and Popo get to higher ledges: --------------------- ---------- ---------- --------------------- ---------- ---------- \/ \/ ---------> /\ /\ --> Popo ---------------------- ----------------------- - Stand underneath the - Jump, and Popo will destroy block you want to break the block with his mallet \/ /\ ------- ------------- ------- ------------- --------> ----------------------- - Jump again, and Popo will jump through the hole to the higher ledge This may take a few times, as the controls work on an on again-off again basis. You use this method to reach the eighth level of the mountain, where you then go to the bonus stage to get more points. The bonus stage controls work the same as the mountain-climbing controls, but you no longer destroy blocks, but jump from platform to platform, and the floors are no longer slippery. 5. The Enemies --------------- There are four enemies in the game: Yetis, Birds, Icicles, and the ground. While only the first three can actually kill you, the ground can be your worst enemy, as it is extremely slippery and makes every jump a hassle. Here is a brief synopsis of each enemy : Yeti - The most common enemy, it will appear on a mountain platform from either the right or left. Depending on which side it comes from, it will travel in that direction until it encounters a hole in its platform. It will then run back to its cave and push an ice block out to fill the hole in the platform. While the Yeti itself is worth no points for hitting with the mallet, the ice blocks it pushes are worth 400 each. When you hit the Yeti with the mallet, it staggers back to its cave, only to return again a few seconds later. Bird - Birds appear from the top of the screen, and float down towards you. If they touch you, you will die. This can be agravating as they tend to appear just as you are in the middle of a jump, with no defenses. If you hit a Bird with your mallet, it is worth 800 points, and they do not return. Icicles - Icicles first start to form beneath the mountain platforms, including clouds. When they completely form the icicle, they fall straight down very fast, killing you if they hit you. While easy to avoid, one or two might hit you on accident, and you cannot kill it with your mallet. Your best bet is to just try your best to stay out of their paths. 6. Two Players --------------- The two player game has the same goals as the one player game, except that both players play simultaneously. They both have to help each otherout, because if one person goes up the mountain too fast, the other person dies by being clipped by the screen. Here a couple of tips to help you out: - You bounce off each other if you jump for the same hole at the same time. Try to make seperate holes in the platforms to avoid colissions. - Have one person be the scout, preferably the better person, to help the other person out. The scout should jump up to the next platform first, to get rid of any enemies so the other player has a clear path. - Communicate, communicate, communicate 7. Final Tips -------------- - Clouds are not slippery, making jumping that much harder, as you will gain no momentum off them. When making multiple cloud jumps, remember to run a little bit before you jump so you don't just go straight up. - Bonus stages are extremely difficult, and they have a time limit. I would suggest heading straight to the top as fast as possible, and don't go out of your way to grab any extra vegetables. - Spend a lot of time on Mountain 10. It is the best mountain to practice your jumping skills, without being overtly difficult. You'll become a master in no time if you play this level a ton. * Nintendo Trivia * - In the Japanese version of Ice Climbers, the Yetis are actually seals. The head of US localization didn't want the game to be nicknamed Seal Clubber, so they changed the seals to Yetis. - The Ice Climbers are playable characters in the GameCube game Super Smash Brothers: Melee. Both characters are on the screen at one time, and IMHO they are the best characters in the game:) &&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&& Well, this is my 20th FAQ so far, and I hope many more are to come.
