Popeye Review

Popeye the sailor man...

09/27/2001

Background/Story
Popeye was a popular cartoon in the 80's. This game is a conversion of the arcade game made in 1982, where Popeye must save Olive from Bluto.

Game Statistics

  • Four game modes.
  • Released in 1982.

Game Design
There are three basic levels in which Popeye must collect items which olive drops. Olive is at the top of the screen and her items move unpredictably downwards. Popeye must avoid Bluto and other enemies whilst collecting the items. When you have filled the bar you move onto the next level. Each level is unique; the first is just basic platforms. The second has a building background and adds challenges with ladders and gaps. The third is on a boat with flying buzzard just to add more difficulty. There is way to stop Bluto for a short while, the first is to punch the ball and drop the bucket on his head or punch the can of spinach and Popeye will become invincible for a short while, you can then chase him and send him flying!

Graphics
This game is rather blocky because it was one of the first sets of games for the NES. All the characters are well draw as they look just like the cartoon. The backgrounds are simple and add to the Popeye theme.

Sound
Popeye's theme tune appears a lot in this game. The music is very well composed for game and its date. The sound FX are suited to their needs.

Control
The controls are easy to use and respond well. The d-pad moves Popeye around, the A button makes Popeye punch and the start button chooses selections and pauses the game.

Satisfaction
This game is very enjoyable. If you like the 80's style of arcade games, or a fan of the cartoon, you will love this game.

Replay Value/Game Length
It has lots of challenge but not enough levels to keep you occupied. This game has lots of replay value because of the simplicity of the game.

Overall
Popeye was made when game play came before graphics. This is why the game is still great today!
