Background/Story
In Goldeneye you play as Bond, James Bond. This game follows the storyline of Goldeneye movie. Each mission takes you farther and farther through the game's story. The story begins when a top-secret combat helicopter was hijacked from a French war vessel. Bond must recover the helicopter and see who was at the bottom of the hijacking. This is game was developed by Rare and published by Nintendo. This is Rare's first ever attempt at making a first-person shooter.

Game Statistics

  • Two game modes.
  • Three difficulty levels.
  • Rumble pak compatible.
  • 96 megabit cartridge.
  • Four game save files.

Game Design
Goldeneye has changed the first-person shooter genre forever. There are many different reasons why, but the main reason is that each mission contained objectives. Goldeneye is not a FPS where you must shoot every thing in sight; you must hit guards and not civilians. When Goldeneye was released it was the most realistic FPS shooter ever made. If a guard is shot in the arm, he reached down and grabs his arm in pain. Goldeneye was the first FPS to make shots damage enemies in varying degrees. If you hit a guard in the foot he will not die, but if you hit him in the chest or head he will die. Also, when Goldeneye was released, the AI was extremely intelligent. If, you were to shoot at an enemy but miss, every guard in the general area of that shoot would come running at you. All of these elements combine make one of the best-designed Nintendo 64 games of all time.

Graphics
At the time of Goldeneye's release the graphics could only be described as stunning. The character animations are very detailed and guards move smoothly through relaxed and moving positions. Gun bullets appear frightening as they come toward the player. The guns themselves look excellent. The areas are designed in a manner so that one does not get confused in a large level. There is very little graphical fog. While Goldeneye's graphical engine is one of the best on the Nintendo 64, it does push the system in terms of framerates. If there are many characters in a large room then the framerate slowdown is noticeable. The framerate is especially evident in the multiplayer mode when four people are playing and grenades or rocket launchers are being used. Never the less, Goldeneye is one of the best when it comes to the graphical department.

Sound
The sound in Goldeneye is amazing. The music tracks are all base on the James Bond theme, which is always a good thing. The sound adds to the realism to the game gunshots sound like gunshot. When bullets hit, the sound is a perfect high-pitched ricochet. Characters make excellent grunting or dying sound when shot.

Control
The control system in Goldeneye makes great use of the Nintendo 64 controller. The control stick moves the character in all directions. The Z button fires the weapon. The A button changes the weapon. The B button is the action button used for activating item and opening doors. It also reloads the gun. The L and R button brings up the sight and allows the player to aim at targets. The D pad and the C button both have the same function. Up or C up makes the character look down. Down or C down makes the character look up. Right and C right and Left and C left let the character sidestep to their respective directions. All of the buttons are very responsive and excellently used. Even if that control style does not suit you, Rare has provided many others, event ones were two players can control one character.

Satisfaction
It is impossible not to like this game. Awesome single player mode and an awesome multiplayer mode. Enough said.

Replay Value/Game Length
Goldeneye is one of those videogames that never ends. The easiest single player mode is challenging, the medium difficulty level single player mode is very hard and the hardest single player mode is next to impossible. Once all of that is completed, one may attempt to obtain every cheat by completing levels in an allotted time. Even if a player has completed every thing they could possible dream of completing in the single player mode, they still have the excellent multiplayer mode at their disposal. A very long game indeed.

Overall
Goldeneye is a system defining game. When people think of some of the best and most fun games they have played on the Nintendo 64, they will always remember, Goldeneye.
