F-Zero: Maximum Velocity Review

Is F-Zero up to speed?

08/19/2001

Background/Story
With refined rules, the F-Zero contest is back. And I mean BACK. This game plays a lot like F-Zero for SNES, rather than on N64. A new group of racers and cars must compete to win the tournament, to win a big fat wad of money for winning and a little prestige, too. The speeds are still high, and the cars still use their anti-grav too. As if it'll ever change.

Game Statistics

  • 32 megabit cartridge.
  • Single-pak and multi-pak link modes.
  • 22 Tracks.
  • 10 different cars.

Game Design
As said earlier, the F-Zero contest has gone right back to basics. Flat tracks with jumps, boosts, and pit areas. No cylinders, tunnels, or pipes any more. But in a good way. The less complex track designs help you to master every track without getting motion sickness, in other words, the tracks actually make sense again. You can play with a single pak (cars are chosen for you and Silence is the only track) or multi-pak - choose your car, choose your track etc.

Graphics
This game completely and utterly blows the primitive Game Boy Colour's (and possibly the Playstation's...shhh) previous attempts at racing out of the water. The cars tilt, move flaps, charge in the pits, tilt upwards or downwards when jumping, are covered in electricity when they crash, and blow up really nicely to boot. The tracks have 2D backgrounds, which animate with lighting and other effects, and the car selection screen looks marvelous. The entire game has a great framerate, which doesn't slow down when the track gets messy, and as if that's not enough, the game's graphics are the smoothest thing since melted butter.

Sound
Ah, the sound. Revs, explosions, boosts, crashes, and the wonderful music. Your batteries will be killed by this game's sound; you can't help but turn it right up. The old tunes from the SNES and N64 titles return, sounding better than ever. The music is just light, so it won't overtake the game sound effects like other games, but not so light that you won't hear it as you scrape round that corner, or slam on those brakes. With the songs never getting repetitive thanks to their great variety, you'll be humming those tunes on the way to work, school, church, and any other place you go for the rest of your life, until you get amnesia.

Control
Ouch. While the game feels comfortable at first, mammoth hands may have trouble with the L and R buttons for increased turning. But as long as you can use a mobile phone without pressing 5 buttons at once, it should be OK.

Satisfaction
Having only played the SNES version once or twice, I can't really say how similar they are. The dynamics are the same, but the tracks and cars are inarguably different. Think of it as an add-on to the original, giving you extras to increase the fun factor. I, myself, prefer this over the SNES version - you can carry it with you, it's got extra cars, the tracks are unique, and the game has a fairly high difficulty setting for pros, and also a great one for beginners, and yes, you intermediate's are catered for too. Overall, I was very satisfied by this game's originality and SPEED.

Replay Value/Game Length
The game also has great replayability. You haven't really finished it till you've finished it with all cars on the master difficulty. Which is quite a feat. I haven't managed it yet, but I'm close. With so many cars, it may seem hard to choose, but once you've got your car picked out, there's nothing you can do to stop this game from hooking you.

Overall
Overall, I think this game will please fans of the series, fans of the genre, and even those who've just picked it up for a little fast-paced fun. I'm not a racing person, RPGs are my cup of tea, but this game has proven to be extremely enjoyable anyway. While not for fans of the realistic based game (go for GT Advance or Top Gear) it pleased me enough to warrant a purchase, and if this game can't please you too, then you have something wrong with you. Or, you just don't like it. Either way, go buy it. If you like it, it's a good idea to buy it, if you don't like it, Nintendo will get more money because you bought it and make a game that you do like. We all win.
