Super Mario Sunshine will be the first GameCube game starring the magical plumber named Mario. Only little is known so far, but so far we can tell that Mario is now sporting a large water dispensing device of his back. He seems to be traveling in urban areas. Super Mario Sunshine will feature the same basic movements as Mario 64, but will also include new abilities.

Mario will explore huge environments, ranging from urban streets to the classic grassy areas littered with piranha plants. Mario can also be seen climbing, tightrope walking, and hanging off a fence (just like in Super Mario World for SNES). When in the grassy area, you can see that there is some sort of sun icon in the top corner, but it does not appear in the urban areas. Perhaps I am posing more questions than I am answering, in any case keep an eye out for updates to this media page.

RECENT DEVELOPMENTS:
Nintendo has now released more information regarding Super Mario Sunshine. Here is the story as they have quoted it:

The storyline in Super Mario Sunshine is much different than what you might expect. This time, things are much more complicated than simply rescuing Princess Peach from Bowser. The adventure starts when Mario and Peach decide to take a well-deserved vacation to a beautiful island in a remote location. Since the island is perpetually sunny and inhabited by friendly locals, it seemed like the perfect choice at first.

In typical fashion, poor Mario never gets a chance to relax. When he arrives on the island, he notices ugly scribble marks covering the walls throughout the community. What's worse, the person responsible for the scribbling has disguised himself to look just like Mario!

Mario is falsely accused by the locals, so he decides to get to the bottom of things. Armed with a new water-pumping backpack, Mario sets out to clean up the scribbling and reveal the identity of the true villain. This is the latest news from Japan, and we can't wait to learn more.
