With a release date expected around November 2002, Metroid Prime is one of the most anticipated games for the GameCube. The story of the Metroid is a long one, spanning 3 consoles already (NES, GameBoy, and SNES).

When a group of space pirates invaded the remote Planet SR-388, they stole an alien being from scientists on the planet. The scientists named this alien a "Metroid". It was this alien species that was responsible for the annihilation of the inhabitants of SR-388. The pirates, now realizing the power they now possessed, made plans to use the alien being as a weapon of evil.

The Galactic Federation would not stand for this, so they attacked the pirates home world of Zebes in an attempted to prevent any such catastrophe as a result of the Metroids. On the brink of defeat, the Federation summoned a fearless bounty hunter named Samus Aran. Like a one-man-army Samus defeated many of the pirates driving them from their world.

However, they managed to sneak away with one surviving Metroid. Samus hunted down the pirates who fled to the planet where the Metroids were discovered. Samus was then ordered by the Federation to destroy the entire race of Metroids. Many species variations of the Metroids were discovered including a Queen Metroid. The bounty hunter succeeded in destroying all living Metroid life. Upon killing the Queen herself, Samus was confronted by a small egg. The egg hatched revealing a baby Metroid. The innocence of the baby Metroid was enough for Samus to take the creature as a pet.

On the planet Ceres, scientists discovered that the energy attribute of the baby Metroid could benefit mankind. Samus soon received a distress call for the planet Ceres. One of the remaining pirates had murdered the scientists and stolen the Metroid. Stalking the pirate back to his home world of Zebes, Samus succeeded in eliminating the last of the pirates. He fled the planet as the self-destruction sequence was initiated. All the pirates and every Metroid were destroyed.

The end of a long and bitter story? Perhaps. Perhaps not. The big question now is whether the new Metroid title will be a sequel of a prequel. The word "Prime" could mean first, as in the first Metroid game (and therefore a prequel). But Prime could also mean best, as in the best Metroid game (and therefore a sequel). Were all the Metroids destroyed? Have some pirates survived? These kinds of questions keep you up at night, eagerly awaiting the release of Metroid Prime.

RECENT DEVELOPMENTS:

Sequel. Nintendo has now reported that the story of Metroid Prime will continue from the end of Super Metroid. As the world of Zebes exploded, one solitary Metroid had been encapsulated within a chunk of the planet. As it whirled through space the rock crashed into the planet called Taron. Apparently, chaos erupts, and it looks like it is up to our favourite heroine to save the day.

Nintendo has stated that Metroid Prime and Metroid Fusion will link to each other via the GCN/GBA Link Cable. Nintendo did not got into may details, simply saying that linking the two games would be, "cool."
